President Goodluck Jonathan has promised that his administration will continue to progressively strengthen its affirmative action in favour of women.
The president on Sunday joined his wife, Patience, and mother, Eunice, to attend a special service organised to mark this year’s Mothers’ Day at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja. Jonathan, according to a statement by Reuben Abati, his special adviser on media and publicity, saluted all Nigerian women and mothers as they marked the day set aside worldwide to commemorate mothers and their great, unique and indispensable service to humanity.
He assured them that the Federal Government would continue to do all within its powers to further empower women to play their immense, God-given roles for the greater glory of the nation. “As he has promised on many occasions, President Jonathan reaffirms that his administration will continue to progressively strengthen its affirmative action in favour of girls, women and mothers while intensifying its actions aimed at promoting gender equality in the nation,” the statement read in part.
The president prayed that God would bless all Nigerian mothers and reward them for the immense love and care with which they continue to nurture and raise worthy children on whom the future prospects of the nation will depend. During the service which was attended by top government functionaries as well as presidential aides, the president led men to sing special songs for mothers.
