The security situation resulting from such attacks has a profound impact on businesses across various sectors, hindering economic growth and stability.
As most Nigerians were preparing for the joy and happiness of the December 2023 Christmas Day, murderers cowardly crept into different communities in two local governments of Plateau State and slaughtered over 100 persons in cold blood.
Even though the military said they responded to 36 distress calls from different locations, their efforts did not stop the killers from their bloodthirsty quest. Both Bokkos and Mangu local governments were attacked on the Christmas Eve.

The assailants targeted 17 communities in “senseless and unprovoked” attacks on Saturday and Sunday, burning down most houses in the area”; Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang said in a state broadcast.
“As I am talking to you, in Mangu local government alone, we buried 15 people. As of this morning, in Bokkos, we are counting not less than 100 corpses. I am yet to take stock of (the deaths in) Barkin Ladi, It has been a very terrifying Christmas for us here in Plateau.”; Mutfwang said.
While urging the communities to remain calm but vigilant, Mutfwang also directed security agencies to promptly apprehend those responsible for the heinous act and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.
Our Correspondent who was in Bokkos local government recently gathered that immediate consequence of the attack is the heightened atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Businesses in the area and surrounding areas face a constant threat to their operations, leading to disruptions in day-to-day activities.
The fear of violence and insecurity not only jeopardizes the safety of employees but also deters potential investors and customers, creating a hostile environment for business.
Supply chain disruptions have become a common occurrence due to the recent crisis. The attacks by suspected herders have affected transportation routes, making it challenging for businesses to receive raw materials and distribute finished products. This logistical nightmare not only increases operational costs but also compromises the quality and timeliness of goods and services.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bokkos Local Government Area bear a disproportionate burden. These businesses, often the backbone of local economies, struggle to survive as the crisis hampers their day-to-day operations. From disruptions in cash flow to physical damages, the recent attacks create an array of problems that hinder the growth and sustainability of these businesses.
The attacks exacerbate existing challenges in the agricultural sector, a vital component of Plateau State’s economy. The displacement of farmers and destruction of farmlands in Bokkos hinder agricultural activities, leading to reduced yields and increased food insecurity. This not only affects the livelihoods of those directly involved in agriculture but also has broader implications for the entire community.
Tourism, which holds significant potential for Plateau State, is severely impacted by the recent crisis. The picturesque landscapes that could attract visitors become overshadowed by safety concerns, leading to a decline in tourism-related businesses and opportunities. The attack further reinforces a negative image of the area deterring potential tourists and investors.
Real estate businesses has encountered difficulties in attracting clients and investors due to the recent attacks. The fear of violence and instability makes potential buyers and tenants hesitant, impacting the revenue streams of real estate ventures. The property market witnesses a slump as the recent attacks further deter business activities and investments in the area.
The attacks has a detrimental impact on the education sector. Schools and educational institutions face disruptions to regular academic activities, and the safety concerns associated with the crisis lead to decreased enrollment. The long-term consequences include a potential decline in the overall educational attainment of the population, hindering the development of a skilled workforce.
The healthcare sector in the attacked communities is strained as the demand for medical services surges amidst the crisis. However, the disruptions in transportation and safety concerns hinder the timely delivery of medical supplies and primary healthcare services. This strain on the healthcare system further compounds the challenges faced by businesses in the area.
The recent attacks have led to an increase in unemployment as businesses struggle to operate in the volatile environment. Job opportunities diminish, leaving many without a means of livelihood. The resultant rise in unemployment not only affects individual households but contributes to a broader societal challenge of economic instability.
The crisis-induced migration of skilled workers from Bokkos, and its environs poses a challenge for businesses. As individuals seek safer environments, the exodus of talent deprives businesses of valuable human resources. The brain drain exacerbates skill shortages and hampers the innovation and competitiveness of businesses in the area.
The attack-induced scarcity of resources, both human and material, leads to an inflationary pressure on the cost of doing business in the attacked area. Businesses experience increased costs for security measures, insurance premiums, and even basic utilities. This inflationary pressure further squeezes profit margins and reduces the competitiveness of businesses in the area
When BusinessDay spoke to Hanatu Pam, one of the residents, she said “the recent crisis in Bokkos hampers the ability of businesses to access external markets.
The tarnished image of this place due to security concerns makes it difficult for businesses to attract partners and investors. The isolation from markets limits growth opportunities and stifles the economic potential of businesses in the local government area.
“The attacks on us have a lasting impact on the reputation of businesses associated with here. The negative perception of Bokkos as an unstable and insecure business environment tarnishes the brand image of local businesses. Rebuilding trust and restoring a positive reputation becomes a formidable task for businesses in the aftermath of the recent attacks,”Hanatu decried.
The case is the same in Mangu local government where Business activities also crumble.
The recent attacks on Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas by herders have intensified the challenges faced by businesses in Plateau State. From disruptions in supply chains to heightened security concerns, the impact is pervasive and multifaceted.
Overcoming these challenges requires a concerted effort from both the public and private sectors, with a focus on addressing the root causes of the crisis and implementing measures to create a secure and conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
