Marking a remarkable ten years in the corporate world recently, she couldn’t help but reflect on her journey from where she was to where she stands today. She vividly remembers being a university student, filled with awe when she came across CVs that proudly boasted a decade’s worth of experience. She often wondered when she would be able to say the same about herself as it seemed like a lifetime away.
In this moment, she is filled with euphoria as she looks back on the incredible journey of the past ten years, having navigated through the labyrinth of the corporate world, here are some lessons she has learnt over the past decade:
Learning Never Ends: No matter how many years you spend in your career, you’ll never reach a point where you know everything.
Don’t Compare, Don’t Envy: Resist the urge to compare your career trajectory to your peers.
Non-Linear Career Paths Are Normal: Careers are rarely a straight line. Embrace the twists, turns, and unexpected opportunities that come your way.
Build a Support System: You can’t do it all by yourself. Seek mentors, colleagues, and friends who can offer guidance, support, and a listening ear when needed.
Mistakes Happen, Learn and Grow: You will make mistakes along the way. Don’t let them define you.
Saying No Opens Doors: Sometimes, saying no is the best thing you can do.
Pay It Forward: Looking after and watching out for others, never goes out of fashion. Be kind, share your knowledge, and lift others as you climb.
