The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has described the West African Capital Market Integration (WACMI) as an opportunity for Nigerian investors to expand their reach beyond the shores.

Oscar Onyeama, NSE chief executive officer said this at the investors’ clinic for journalist association held on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to him, while the NSE’s focus from 2011 to 2013 has been on revamping corporate governance, improving human capacity, cleansing and restructuring the market, improving technology, product development, and advocacy for changes to policy, from beginning of  2014, it  determined to shift gears to drive innovations centred on increasing global visibility for the Nigerian capital market.

“We intend to develop a larger footprint on the African continent and ultimately, target emerging market status. That is why we are very much in support of the WACMI efforts and similar programs. This will open opportunities for you, the Nigerian investors, to extend your reach”.

He said aside from understanding capital market products as individual investors, the investors’ clinic programme is intended to aid the appreciation of basic investment principles, deepen our understanding of the capital market cycle and trends, help in restoring confidence in the Nigerian Capital Market through dissemination of information about investor protection, and highlight the important role of journalism in improving financial literacy in Nigeria.
