Three time champion Germany will be looking for their fourth title when they face-off against Argentina in the World Cup 2014 final in Rio De Janeiro. It has been 24 years since Germany last lifted the glorious trophy.
Buoyant Germany have been playing some quality football throughout and on their way to the final have handed drubbing to the heavyweights. Here we take a look at round by round performance by Germany and how they made it to the final.
Group Stage:
Germany was placed in Group G along with Portugal, Ghana and USA. In the opening game against Portugal, the Germans displayed their skills with an emphatic 4-0 win. In their second group match Miroslav Klose’s goal in 71st minute saw Germans secure a 2-2 draw against Ghana. Then Thomas Muller’s lone goal of the match against the USA made sure Germany tops the group with seven points and qualifies for the last 16.
Round of 16:
Germany faced Algeria in the round of 16 fixture and had tough time negotiating them. With goalless full-time the game went into an extra time, Andre Schuerrle and Mesut Ozil netted one goal each before Algeria found the net in last minute. The game ended with a 2-1 score line to see Germans enter the last 8.
Quarter-final:
Mats Hummel’s early and only goal in 13th minute of the match against France in the quarter-finals meant Germany became the only team in history to qualify for a fourth consecutive semi-final. France could not break through the German defence and failed to equalise.
Semi-final:
It was an absolute carnage as the home team Brazil were completely outdone by German brilliance. Germany netted five goals inside the first 30 minutes and left the crowd at Belo Horizonte stunned.
Not only this, Germany came back after the half-time to score two more goals and made it seven. Oscar scored the consolation goal in the 90th minute for Brazil but it was too late to stop Germans from qualifying for the final. It was a historic 7-1 win for Germans in their fourth consecutive semi-final.
Trivia: Germany have so far scored 17 goals in six matches, the most in this tournament with 64 attempts on target. Thomas Muller is their top scorer with five goals and three assists to his name.
