The Mainland local government area in Lagos has established itself as the leader when it comes to the spread of coronavirus in in the state.
Of the 20 council areas measured only three have recorded up to a hundred cases each. The Lagos mainland council tops the chart with a total of 541 confirmed cases as at Friday May 8, 2020 and it is followed by Eti-Osa with 200 cases while at 138, Mushin local government comes third.
Four other council areas have 50 or more cases. They are Ikeja 73, Alimosho 69 cases, Kosofe 59 and Apapa 55.
Only three council areas have single digit figures – Epe 8, Badagry 5 and Ojo 4 cases. All others are in between.
Lagos is not just the point at which the first recorded case was confirmed, the commercial capital is now truly established as the state with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Nigeria and it is also the fastest growing.

Since the first case was recorded on February 27, the virus has spread across the state with one local government alone, Mainland having a total of 541 cases.
Today, Lagos now accounts for about 39% of the total number of cases in Nigeria. Over 70% of the confirmed cases in Lagos are still on admission and this will quickly put strain on the current healthcare structure of the state.
It will be unsurprising if the state government begins to empower primary healthcare centres in the state to manage mild to moderate cases of Covid-19 because of this pressure.
