The number of persons living below the poverty line of–$1.9 a day– in Nigeria stood at 82.9 million in 2019, state-funded agency, National Bureau of Statistics said.
Africa’s largest economy which also holds the mantle of being the most populous nation in the continent, recorded a poverty rate of 40.09 percent, with the rural area accounting for the larger chuck of the figure of 52.18,NBS noted in a poverty and inequality data released in the early hours of Monday.
States of Sokoto, Taraba and Jigawa, reported the highest poverty incidence in the period with a poverty rate of 87.73, 87.72 and 87.02 percent respectively.

This is followed by Ebonyi Adamawa and Zamfara with a 79.76, 75.41 and 73.98
On the other hand, Lagos, Delta, Osun, Ogun and Oyo, recorded the least poverty rate at 4.5 , 6.02, 8.52 , 9.32 and 9.83 percent respectively.
