The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday in Abuja inaugurated a special committee to fine-tune four proposed bills meant to facilitate the reform of the nation’s transport sector.
The bills are the National Transport Commission Bill (2014); Nigeria Railway Bill (2014); Nigerian Ports and Harbour Authority Bill (2014) and National Inland Waterways Authority Bill (2014).
Briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly FEC meeting, Labaran Maku, the minister of information, said the committee would be headed by Mohammed Adoke, the minister of justice, with the ministers of aviation, transport and works as members.
“The minister of transport by leave of the president tabled before council four bills that will transform the way the transport sector is working today.
“The bills, which we are discussing in order to forward them to the National
2Assembly for deliberation and approval, are the National Transport Commission Bill (2014); Nigeria Railway Bill (2014); Nigerian Ports and Harbour Authority Bill (2014) and the National Inland Waterways Authority Bill (2014).
“The entire objectives of these reforms are to create regulatory agencies that will be able to monitor the operation of actors in the new transformed public infrastructure system, which we believe these reforms will bring about.”
He said that some relevant ministers and stakeholders in the railways, maritime, and aviation sectors would also serve in the committee.
