American Business Council is seeking quick assent to the data protection bill currently in the National Assembly which seeks to protect data information of businesses and firms in order to avert concerns of compromise of data security.
The bill which has currently passed second reading at the Upper Legislative Chamber is due for a public hearing, even as Senator Yakubu Oseni who is the Chairman Senate Committee on ICT has assured that the bill is receiving proper attention at the National Assembly and would be passed soon.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at a data protection workshop organised by the American Business Council, Margaret Olele, the Executive Secretary American Business Council told BusinessDay that the bill is best fit for the country and would help the private sector thrive in business while attracting investments.
“Harnessing opportunities in data when it is protected is key in ensuring the passage of the bill. This is a bill that is the best fit for the country and will assist businesses in the private sector.
“It is important for the security of individuals and security of the country so that we could have the assurance that the data economy comprising of intellectual property and the overall data related economy is protected.
The passage of the bill, she notes, would help Nigeria to have a leverage in data related economic investment issues, drive ease of doing business while attracting investment into the overall economy.
“We would appreciate a bill that is less draconian but encouraging investors to make investments and protecting businesses.We appreciate the work the National Information Technology Development Agency has done in the policy to enhance data protection.
Earlier in his remarks, Senator Yakubu Oseni said he would work hard to ensure the passage of the bill noting that the passage would encourage private sector investment in line with floral best practices.
He notes that the bill among other issues seek to protect fundamental rights of people related to the data while also seek security on hackers of account.
“We are assuring the public that whatever we need to do as the legislature to ensure the passage of the bill would be done to endure Nigeria works in line with global best practices.
