Sports minister says about N1.2bn needed to fix sports facilities
The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, 0n Wednesday disclosed that said his Ministry will require N1.2b yearly to maintain existing sports facilities across the country.
The Minister praised Team Nigeria for their outstanding performance at the just concluded Africa Games in Morocco, adding that it will serve as a benchmark for the 2020 Olympics preparation.
Team Nigeria finished second at Rabat, Morocco behind Egypt the the just concluded African Games. Nigeria won a total of 121 medals: 46 gold, 33 silver and 47 bronze.
According to him, Team Nigeria had only seven weeks to prepare for that game, but added that the country would have performed better, “if it had a longer period to prepare for the games
“So there is a lesson learnt from there,” he said.
He said the athletes will depart for the Doha on Saturday, adding that the outcome will determine Nigeria’s performance in the 2020 June Olympics.
