The Kwara State government has promised to do everything humanly possible and within its scarce resources to strengthen road networks to enhance transport business in the State.
The State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq made the pledge yesterday while commissioning Central Zone Secretariat office complex of the National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW ) in Ilorin.
The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Kayode Alabi said government have started fixing roads, starting with patching of potholes especially in the metropolis.
He revealed that constructions of some roads across the state would soon be awarded.
Abdulrazaq added that his government is ready to listen to suggestions to strengthen the synergy already established between government and the Union.
However, the Governor assured that the present administration would not relent in making life better for Kwarans.
While commending the Union for its achievements, he noted that road transport sector constituted one of the
largest employers of labour in the Nigerian economy with over 1.5 million people engaged in the sector.
In his goodwill message, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Service Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi appreciated the government for its road rehabilitation and commended the leadership of NURTW for the remarkable progress and transformation in the Union.
He said FRSC had witnessed improvements with the collaboration between its and NURTW and appealed to the Union to look into overloading by its members.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Waba, represented by Benson Opah equally appreciated the leadership of NURTW for its investment consciousness.
The National President of the Union, Najeemdeen Yasin explained that the commissioning was a dream come true, calling on the coming administration to improve on their achievements.
The Zonal Chairman of NURTW, Danjuma Jaji appreciated the leadership of the Union under Najeemdeen Yasin for his good work in office and proposed that the newly commissioned complex be named after Yasin.
Earlier in his address, the State Chairman of NURTW, Aliyu Issa Ore, appealed to the government to look into illegal transport unions totalling six that are being controlled by politicians in the last administration.
