The vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo will proffer critical steps Nigeria need to take towards achieving all round prosperity at the pre-convocation lecture of University of Lagos, Akoka.
Osinbajo who will be delivering the convocation lecture titled “Nigeria Rising: The Path to Prosperity.” at the event scheduled for Monday, April 1st 2019, at the Ade-Ajayi auditorium of the university.
Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, vice chancellor of the university while speaking at the pre- convocation press conference held at the senator chamber Wednesday said under his watch, the university has pursued an uncompromising academic standard; local and global network s; innovative fund raising mechanism amongst others on the path to making school greater than the best.
Ogundipe said in the last one year, Unilag has expanded the mandate of the entrepreneurship and skills development center to engage in critical activities to promote entrepreneurship training for both staff and students of the university.
The 12th vice chancellor of Unilag said the University of Lagos Business School will soon take off while the university is set to start a microfinance bank which will serve as additional source of revenue for the university
He further said that apart from research and teaching, community service is an essential part of the reason universities are established, adding that the institution is set to train young girls in secondary schools around the community in web programming , robotics and artificial intelligence.
Aside the convocation lecture, other activities for the four-day programme between 1st and 5th April include honourary doctorate degree to be conferred on Jim, Ovia, founder , Zenith Bank, Lateef Okunnu, former pro chancellor University of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue State and Daniel Olukoya, general overseer, mountain of fire and miracle ministries.
Others are conferment of emeritus professorship to Sulaiman Adekola, former deputy vice chancellor (administration) Unilag.
Giving a breakdown of the figures for the golden jubilee convocation, Ogundipe said that a total of 12,811 students will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates
According to him, “Of this number, 7,406 representing 57.8 percent will receive first degrees or diplomas wile 5,406 representing 42.2 per cent will receive post graduate degrees”.
The vice chancellor said that a total of 271 students would be awarded First class degrees of which 56 are from the faculty of Engineering.
He stated that the best graduating students with cumulative grade point average of 4.96 at this convocation are Ekeh Ogechi Joedicta from the faculty of Pharmacy; Adeyeye Adeniyi from the department of Insurance and Ogbechi Chinaedum from the department of Business Administration. While in the post graduate category, Ajibade Ayodele of the department of Metallurgical and material engineering will receive over best Ph.D. Thesis.
“A breakdown of the other classes of degrees shows that 2,277 in Second Class Upper; 3,116 in Second Class Lower; 1197 in Third class; 131 in pass while 414 in degrees or diplomas that are not classified”, he said.
