The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has assured Nigerians that it will do every thing within the law to address the disturbing trend of vote buying in the country.
The INEC chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, gave this assurance while presenting certificates of registration to the 23 newly registered political parties in Abuja on Thursday.
The INEC chairman, who described vote buying as ” cancer that must be stamped out” expressed worries about how the menace negatively affected recent elections in the country. He urged all the stakeholders to make concerted efforts to stamp vote buying out of the nation’s electoral system.
While congratulating the new parties the INEC boss noted that the parties emerged out of about 144 political association seeking registration. He noted the new political parties have satisfied the requirements of sections 222, 223 and 224 of the 1999 Constitution.
