MDAs presentation absent as Buhari presides over FEC
President Muhammadu Buhari is presiding over the weekly Federal Executive Council ( FEC) meeting with most of the Ministers attending.
The President, looking fresh in his green Agbada and cap to match, took charge of proceedings with a call for opening prayers at exactly 11 am on Wednesday soon after he arrived the Council chambers accompanied by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and a retinue of aides.
The President had missed the last two meetings following his trip to the United Kingdom to attend Commonwealth Heads of States and Government meeting ( CHOGM).
The Vice President had presided over the meetings while the President was away at the CHOGM meeting.
The Federal Executive Council is empowered by the Constitution to formulate policies that determines the general direction of the country.
BusinessDay checks reveals that the regular weekly presentation by the MDAs was absent from the agenda at this week’s FEC, despite the fact that most of the Ministers are in attendance.
Few memos were however listed for presentation and approval by some Ministers.
The cabinet meeting, according to Charter 6, section 148, Sub section (2) of the Constitution as amended states that “The President shall hold regular meetings with the Vice-President and all the Ministers of the Government of the Federation for the purposes of, (a) determining the general direction of domestic and foreign policies of the Government of the Federation.
Others as listed in section 148 (2) (b) include, co-ordinating the activities of the President, the Vice-President and the Ministers of the Government of the Federation in the discharge of their executive responsibilities; while (c) charges cabinet members with “advising the President generally in discharge of his executive functions other than those functions with respect to which he is required by this Constitution to seek the advice or act on the recommendation of any other person or body”
