Lagos State government has called for the relocation of residents around the Olusosun dumpsite, near Ojota, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to safety in the interim.
The relocation order, according to the state government, is imperative in the wake of recurring fire incidents at the dumpsite. Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Safety Services had been battling the inferno since last Wednesday, with associated thick smoke emission from the site.
Hakeem Dickson, director-general, Lagos State Safety Commission, who issued the directive when he spoke with journalists, Monday, on “Vision Zero,” a new programme aimed at reducing all forms of accidents in Lagos, said there was the need for the residents to avoid inhaling the smoke in view of its associated health hazards.
According to Dickson, the major reason the government launched the Vision Zero campaign was for corporate bodies and individuals to be safety conscious. He said the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, would next month sign a Safety Policy Document on safety at the workplace at a three-day conference being planned by the commission.
“You would also have observed series of incidences that have been happening recently such as the LPG gas explosions, fire incidences, building collapse, workplace accidents among others. These incidences are of grave concern to the government and this is why we have continued to sensitise the public and engaged stakeholders in order to bring safety to their consciousness and make it a lifestyle.
“Lagos Vision Zero is a transformational approach to prevention that interprets the Tripod stand of Safety, Health, and Wellbeing at all levels at work. It was borne out of the need to reduce to the barest minimum, hazards, and risks in the workplace and ensure zero injury, zero accident, zero death and promote wellbeing and health.”
He explained that,” Vision Zero was not about showmanship, but to raise awareness, engage individuals, companies, stakeholders and groups on avoidable accidents.
