Doubt has again been cast on the fate of about 90 school girls feared abducted by Boko Haram insurgents, following a raid on the Girls Science Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State last Monday.
Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, reportedly said on Wednesday that none of the girls has been rescued.
Giadam is said to have told the families of the girls during a visit to the community, that they should pray for the girls to be found.
Since the alleged abduction of the girls on Monday, there has been a back and forth of reports and statements from officialdom, some claiming that the incident happened, while others said it did not.
A handful of media outfits reported Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, that the girls had been rescued.
Reuters reported Wednesday night, that the military rescued 76 of the schoolgirls and recovered the bodies of two others on Wednesday, after the students went missing during a Boko Haram attack on a village.
The agency had spoken to three parents, a resident and a local government official.
“Everybody is celebrating their coming with songs and praises to God almighty,” said Babagana Umar, one of the parents whose daughter had disappeared. “The only sad news is that two girls were dead and no explanation.”
The report said the rescued girls were returned to the village of Dapchi late on Wednesday evening, according to Umar and other residents.
Earlier on Wednesday, sources told Reuters that 91 people were unaccounted for after a roll-call at their school on Tuesday.
