The Senate abruptly adjourned plenary on Thursday over an electrical surge in one of the technical rooms at the National Assembly.
The incident which was reported to have commenced at SB 63 Technical Room Door 2, was said to have started because of a faulty air conditioner. The room, located under the chamber in basement, had sent smoke to the hallowed chamber, lobby and other offices.
The development led to the switching off of the air-conditioning systems resulting in severe heat.
Shortly after the approval of the Votes and Proceedings and announcements by Senate President Bukola Saraki, Ibrahim Gobir (APC, Sokoto State) moved a motion for adjournment of plenary over what he called ‘unconducive environment’.
Consequently, Saraki adjourned plenary till Tuesday, February 20, 2019.
The development comes a day after the Senate went into a rowdy session over the adoption of the conference committee report on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, which recommended that the presidential election would be the last to be conducted in 2019. The adoption came in the midst of controversy and protests as 10 All Progressives Congress (APC) senators staged a walk out after the controversial report was adopted.
