Buhari in crucial talks with Ortom, others over Benue killings
President Muhammadu Buhari is meeting with prominent Benue State indigenes at the Presidential Villa over the herdsmen-farmers crisis which has claimed several lives in the state.
The governor, Samuel Ortom, former Senate President, David Mark, former governor George Akume, the Tor Tiv, James Ayatse, Senator Bardabas Gemade, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, Senator Josphe Wasu Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Terkimbir Kyamb are some of the notable persons that are attending the meeting.
The meeting which has gone into closed door will focus on the issue of attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen and the alleged arming, training and financing of militia groups by state governments.
A presidency source said the meeting was convened because of the scale of the violence and also the widespread condemnation that have trailed them.
It was also gathered that the president is also expected to seek an explanation about the arrest of some militia members who confessed to being armed by the Benue government.
The Benue government has denied sponsoring the militias.
Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said he was yet to be briefed on the matters being discussed.
He said the government wold work with any group that would provide lasting solutions to the country’s burgeoning security problems.
