Edo Assembly to investigate corporate organisations in Edo
As part of its oversight functions, Edo State House of Assembly on Monday set up three ad-hoc committees made up of 24 members to investigate the operational activities of all existing companies and industries in the state.
A committee will visit all the state government ongoing projects as well as to summon all heads of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in the state for a meeting.
Adjoto Kabiru, speaker of the House, who announced the constitution of the committee at plenary session, said it in line with the House’s oversight functions, saying the committee to investigate the operational activities of all existing companies and industries in the state was in line with the state government aggressive drive to attract investors.
Adjoto said the auditing was to ensure that there was enabling environment for the establishments to operate in the state. The 10-man committee headed by Chris Okaeben (APC), Oredo West, has two weeks to submit its report.
It was mandated to investigate companies, industries and factories such as the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Seplat, Nigerian Bottling Company, Guinness Nigeria, Pan Ocean, Seven Up Bottling Company, Okomu Oil Palm, Presco Oil Palm, all bottling and satchet water producing factories, among others.
The terms of reference of the committee include, the level of compliance to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the relevant laws under which they operate in the state, compliance with the local content needs and corporate social responsibility in areas where they operate.
Other references are the level of tax payment and compliance, challenges, needs and areas where government can be of assistance to the industries and other areas that will be of benefit to the companies and the people of the state.
The committee to visit all the state government ongoing projects also made up of 10-man has Roland Asoro (APC), majority leader of the House, as head.
Adjoto, who said the on-the-spot assessment of the ongoing projects was sequel to the conclusion of the ministerial briefing by the commissioner, noted that the visit would guide the House properly in the consideration and approval of the 2018 budget estimates.
The assembly also set up four-man committee to invite all the PHCs for a meeting to review the state of primary health care in the state. The committee has the immediate past speaker of the House, Justine Okonoboh, as chairman. All the committees have two weeks to submit their reports.
