Eagle Toastmasters Club, a member of Toastmasters International, a non-governmental organisation said it is set to deepen conversation around competent leadership in government and in the corporate world.
Citing the 49 competencies of Toastmasters International, the NGO’s national leaders said Nigeria’s leadership would only move forward and soar when political leaders learn how to communicate.
Speaking during the club Change of Guard ceremony, Abayomi Aiyesimoju, Program Quality Director, District 9 told BusinessDay that Toastmasters is “something” that should be recommended to leaders whether in politics or in business.
“What it does is to develop in people two important skills which if you have as an individual you will be able to make excellent contributions to your corporation and organisation. These are communication and leadership skills,” Aiyesimoju said.
Ambassador Vincent Sunny Okobi, the first chartered member of the club in Nigeria recalled that since the club was established in 2005, it has consistently provided a platform for many leaders to improve their ability to speak and communicate effectively. He expressed confidence in the new crop of leadership the club has produced.
“As we pass on the baton to them, they are fully equipped. They are getting training in leadership that you can get nowhere else but in Toastmasters,” Okobi said.
Unekwu Nwaezeapu, the incoming President of the premier Toastmasters Club said the handover ceremony was very significant as it signified continuity in the vision of the club’s founding members.
