If you haven’t started networking, start it right now. But first i want to ask a question,is the word or action overrated? Is it mere engagement and discussions with some people you met in not so random places. Networking goes beyond the meeting,in fact networking is following up with your recent most value adding contacts.
Before you attend an event,
Identify why you are attending the event, have a specific goal in mind. as yourself these three questions below
- What am i aiming to get out of this event?
- How many people do i really want to connect it? Do i really want to talk to people or the speakers?
- Do i just want to ‘famz’,snap pictures or actually exchange contacts?
After identifying your goals and what you really want, bar in mind that every corner of the hall is a possible meeting point, some people believe that its only those that sit in front interact with the speakers or gain more. My advice is sit wherever you like but please don’t stroll late into the event, you would not want to be marked as the late comer. Your most valuable connection might be initiated at the entrance.
If there’s an opportunity to ask questions, ask intelligent and mind blogging questions, this sets you apart and gives you an extra point when you seek after whomever you want to. It is pertinent to create a lasting impression, this helps in your follow up. Don’t go around sharing your business card!
Most speakers, celebrities, influencers and CEO’s don’t give out their personal telephone numbers, ask for their email and if you’re a social media lover, follow them on spot and request for an immediate follow back.
Here are some few personal tips on follow up
- Email them within 24-48 hours after the event, be precise in your email. If you don’t get a reply within 3-5 days try again. Compose your email well and proof read severally before hitting the send button. Re introduce a topic that was agreed on by both parties.
- Attend another event, they would be present it. Reinforce the connection, don’t appear like a stalker.Speak with confidence
- This is a digital age, engage with them on all social media platforms.
They key thing is connecting with a few like minds or mentors and staying in constant touch
