Onyebuchi Ekuma, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has emerged the star winner of the 2016 Etisalat-DigitalSENSE students essay contest.
Nkemdilim Nweke, the Executive Director, Operations at DigitalSENSE Africa (DSA) Media Group, said this in a statement in Lagos on Sunday.
Nweke said that the 2016 students’ essay contest which was the second edition had: “Internet Governance: Creating Opportunities for All Nigerians,’’ as its theme.
“The essay competition is aimed at encouraging creativity and discourse on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) among Nigerian youths, especially, students.
“A 400-level medical student, Onyebuchi Ekuma, emerged the star winner, Henry Oguns, a five-hundred level Petrochemical Engineering student from the University of Benin, Edo, was the runner-up.
“ Christopher Egwe, a fourth year law student from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka-Anambra, came third,’’ she said.
Nweke said that the winners would, in the coming weeks, receive their prizes which would include a laptop, a tablet and a smart phone.
Nweke said that the participants’ ages ranged from 18 years to 30 years in the competition sponsored by Etisalat Nigeria and organised by DigitalSENSE Africa Media.
She advised Nigerian youths on the relevance of the Internet, saying that it was the key to virtually every progress in life.
“The Internet provides the connectivity that yields efficiency to employment creation, healthcare delivery, economic development and indeed all sectors of life,’’ he said.
The first runner up, Henry Ogun, urged youths in Nigeria to embrace opportunity as the one offered by Etisalat-DigitalSENSE Africa to diversify their limitless positivity through proper harnessing.
“The way forward is active participation,’’ he said.
The second runner up, Christopher Egwe, said the internet was a blessing to this generation.
“More than ever, “We are connected to persons and opportunities to further our dreams and ambitions in life, and to create positive impact in the society.”
Egwe urged the youth to seize this rare opportunity to connect with those positive opportunities, persons, and communities which could help them to project their lives’aspirations.
