Southern governors’ wives to embark on child/women empowerment programmes
The Southern Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum has pledged to vigorously pursue programmes and activities that will enhance and cater for the physical, spiritual, emotional and moral needs of the girl-child and women.
The group made the pledge in Umuahia, Abia State capital at the end of its 4thquarterly meeting, recently.
In a 12-paragraph Communiqué signed by Nkechi Rochas Okorocha and Olufunso Amosun, chairperson and secretary, respectively, SGWF said it would also encourage and support women to get involved in community services and development
That the SGWF would initiate enlightenment and advocacy programmes that would encourage children to develop along the lines of their natural talents and abilities.
That the SGWF frowned at and condemned the maltreatment of widows which came in various guises.
It also said it would be in the vanguard of attitudinal change campaigns so as to eschew unbridled and wicked rumours and the negative practice of women engaged in pulling down fellow women.
The forum also said it would encourage women to engage their children in sex education and facts of life as a way of discouraging promiscuity and the ugly incidence of teenage pregnancy.
It also added that, through seminars and symposia, the SGWF would encourage women to do regular medical check-ups and adopt practices that would particularly detect the early stages of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, because early detection saves lives.
The group further resolved to make impact in every host state by sponsoring a project/programme.
It said the forum empowered 300 indigent women of Abia origin with materials and equipment to help them start small businesses and become self reliant.
