The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), said they would collaborate to boost waste management in the FCT.
Omolola Olanipekun, the Director, AEPB stated this on Saturday in Abuja, when members of the board and officials of JICA visited residents of Life Camp.
Olanipekun said that the aimed of the visit was to raise awareness on the implementation of the Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWM) project in Abuja.
She said the collaboration was aimed at effective implementation of the project, adding that the efforts would help to educate the residents on proper ways to manage waste.
“The project will educate the residents on a better way to handle waste, to avoid unnecessary odour and scattering of waste water.
“I believe AEPB`s collaboration with JICA, will enable proper implementation of the project in the district and such efforts will promote waste management,’’ she said.
Olanipekun said that the aimed of the project was to improve solid waste management system in the FCT through the management of waste collection by contractors.
The director advised residents to embrace culture of cleanliness in order to check outbreak of epidemic.
Yamauchi Hisashi, from JICA, said that proper waste management was critical for safety of the environment and healthy living of the people.
“When you use proper liners and containers for your trash, you are preventing toxic materials from entering the environment.
“When waste is disposed of properly, you can prevent hazardous materials from contaminating the environment, that is the reason we are collaborating with the board to ensure a successful project,’’ he said.
Eze Jones, a resident of Life Camp, commended the AEPB and JICA for the exercise, but advised that critical measures must be taken to ensure proper management of the waste.
Jones said that the exercise would encourage the residents to always make proper use of their waste bins as well as keeping their surroundings clean.
