The maiden edition of the most fascinating and competitive beach sports event that will feature 10 participating teams from Lagos metropolis kicks-off on March 3rd and 4th, 2017 at the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the prestigious sport carnival, Mr. Dapo Onamusi, Account Director, Discovery Brands Management Ltd said, ‘This sport event is a first of its kind in Nigeria because it features 15 games with some peculiar to this competition all of which are engaging and fun’.
The 15 games are categorized into three; the sand sports, the Speed Sports and the Strength Sports. The sand sports are; Volley Ball, Wheel Barrow Race, High Jump, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. The strength games are; Beach Put, Drag race, Sumo wrestling, Truck Tyre race and Tug of war and lastly the Speed games are made up of 50m Sprint, 100m Sprint, 4X50m Relay, 50m backward sprint and 50m Sack Race.
Of the 15 games, there are male categories, female categories, male only categories and the combined category. The games with the male and female categories are High jump, long jump, triple jump, Wheel barrow race, 50m Sprint, 100m Sprint, 50m backward sprint and 50m Sack Race. The male only categories are games that are strictly for men are Beach Put, Drag race, Sumo wrestling and Truck Tyre race. The combined category are the game that involve both male and female participation, they are 4X50m Relay, Volley ball, and Tug of war.
According to Onamusi, the idea behind the project is to reignite fresh physical/sporting activities that are aimed at the development of young people in the state and discovering talents.
He added that the 10 teams comprising of both male and female members participating are from core areas in Lagos state namely; Agege, Ajah, Ajengunle, Festac, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lekki, Oshodi, Surulere and Yaba. With a total number of 200 participants, 20 athletes per team, the ultimate prize to be won is a whopping 1.5 million naira
Each team will be named after late Nigerian heroes, who have made a tremendous impact in the growth and development of the country. The selected legends are;Margaret Ekpo, Herbert Macaulay, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe, Fela Kuti, Tafawa Balewa, Mary Slessor, Anthony Enahoro, Queen Amina, Jaja Okpobo.
The event hosts are Brilla FM sports presenters; Murphy Ijemba and Sean Amadi, with an expected audience of 4000 people including secondary school students selected from each of the team areas to cheer for them. As a form of engagement, the students also have a ceremonial race to kick-start the finale.
The major objectives of the competition are; to involve grass root talents in a global event, to create a platform for effective representation of youths in different communities and to discover talents to represent countries on a global scale.
