While Nigerians await the expiration of the tenure of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), the leadership of the National Judicial Council (NJC) has commenced moves to see to the confirmation of a substantive CJN for the country.
A very reliable source at the NJC, confirmed to our reporter on Wednesday morning, that the council was about to commence its meeting, sequel to its earlier recommendations to the Presidency, for the post of the CJN.
It is worthy of note that, the NJC is chaired by the CJN, who happens to be Justice Onnoghen, even though he is still in his acting capacity.
There are however, unconfirmed reports that the Acting President , Yemi Osinbajo, would in no time send, Justice Onnoghen’s name to the National Assembly for confirmation as the substantive CJN, even though the Senate is presently on recess.
In a chat with BusinessDay, a very reliable source had disclosed that, if Onnoghen does not get confirmed after the expiration of the first three months provided for by the constitution, a very reliable source said that, the position of the NJC still subsists.
After the expiration of the first three months in acting capacity, the NJC can still recommend Justice Onnoghen to the Presidency for confirmation, from where the Onus lies on the Presidency to transmit same to the Senate for confirmation.
