The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abia State Command Umuahia, recently saved an 18-year old pregnant girl, Miss Deborah (Surname withheld) from committing suicide at a forest in Ossah Mission Hill, Umuahia.
Walter Akubiro Chika, the state commandant, while briefing journalists in Umuahia disclosed that the teenage girl, a native of Ariaria in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state claimed that she had lost hope in life after death of her father in 2013 which led her mother, Happiness, to remarry. She said that the mother later abandoned her and her three other siblings who are all girls.
According to Chika, the rescued girl said she had made several efforts to re-write her future and that of her siblings but all in vain, hence her decision to run to her boyfriend David (Surname withheld) in Aba but who hails from Owerri, Imo State.
The commandant said that Deborah in course of living with the boyfriend got pregnant but the boyfriend reportedly denied any responsibility and instead drove her out of his house.
The commandant said that according to Chika, having been overwhelmed by her unbearable condition without a helping hand, she began to wander about the streets until she finally decided to end her life.
The Abia NSCDC boss said: “Fortunately an officer of the Command attached to the Presiding Pastor of Heavenly Jerusalem Assembly Ossah sighted her in the forest and rescued her”.
The State Commandant said efforts so far made by Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Anti-Child Trafficking Unit to trace the mother of the girl as well as her boyfriend proved abortive but he assured Deborah of adequate care by the corps and a brighter future irrespective of her situation.
He also enjoined the general public to always give a helping hand to vulnerable persons in society as such gesture would go a long way in attracting blessings to society.
He however, mandated the anti-child trafficking unit of the corps to carry its duty diligently to ensure all processes towards handing the victim over to the Women Development Ministry in the State were carried out.
