The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) on Friday released the results of the May/June 2016 Senior Secondary School Certificate examination with 137,295 candidates having their results withheld for various forms of malpractices.
Olu Adenipekun, The Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC at a press briefing at the council’s office in Yaba, Lagos, stated that the results of 137,295 candidates, representing 8.89 percent are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice.
Adenipekun said the reported cases of malpractices are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigerian Examinations Committee (NEC) of the Council in due course for consideration adding that the Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
The head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, while presenting the detailed results disclosed that of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 878,040 candidates, representing 52.97 percent obtained credits in five (5) subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
“A total of 1,014,573 candidates, representing 65.70 percent obtained six (6) credits and above; while 1,167,484 candidates, representing 75.60% obtained five (5) credits and above”, he said.
He further noted that the percentage of candidates that obtained five (5) credits and above including English Language and Mathematics in the WASSCE for School Candidates in 2014 and 2015 was 31.28 percent and 38.68 percent respectively indicating an improvement in performance.
According to him, “A total of 1,552,758 candidates registered for the examination for the May/June 2016 WASSCE out of which 1,544,234 candidates, consisting of 825,650 male representing 53.5 percent and 718,585 female representing 46.5 percent candidates sat the examination.
“Out of the total number of candidates who sat the examination, 1,393,907 candidates, representing 90.26 percent have their results fully released, while 158,718 candidates, representing 9.74 percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination” he said.
He however called on candidates who sat the May/June 2016 WASSCE to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website within the next 24 hours.
