Broadway Junior School (BJS), Kirikiri, Lagos recently organised an open house event meant to help pupils understand the practical applications of the theories and principles learnt in the classroom. An annual event, this year’s edition was tagged ‘occupations’.
Various occupations were represented, ranging from engineering, medicine, leather-works, fashion and beauty arts among others. Pupils were required to choose an occupation, conceptualise a project and execute it based on theories or principles learnt in the series of lessons taught in class.
Martins-Igwe Chidebere, a basic five pupil at BJS chose marine engineering and made a ship. Speaking to BusinessDay, he described the processes that led the production of the ship. “I like marine engineering because it deals with the deep blue and vast ocean. I made a ship because ships enable humans to explore the world, I like adventures and exploration” he said.
Ohiwere Derek, head-teacher of BJS pointed out the school continually strives towards excellence. The open house event he contended is designed to help pupils understand rudimentary applications of what they learn in class. “Remember the saying, what I see I remember, what I hear, I forget but what I do, I understand. Our annual open house event helps pupils do, in order to understand.”
BJS teachers Sunday Adebayo, a graduate of Physics and Akintayo Ayoola, graduate of Mathematics & Statistics highlighted the principles behind the ship Chidiebere built. They spoke of power stations, turbines, and electronic dynamics, of clock-wise and anti-clockwise movements, which made the ship work.
Some parents who were present at the event were fascinated by the amount of applied knowledge in display. A parent said “BJS for me is among the best schools in town. It offers an enabling learning environment; state of the art sanitation facilities, a well equipped library and above all BJS provides all the stationary the pupils need in order to learn.”
