Charles Okah, brother of the convicted ex-militant, Henry Okah, attempted suicide at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja before Justice Gabriel Kolawole, yesterday.
The accused person, who is standing trial as regards the 2011 Independence day bombing, made the attempt on his life after the trial judge adjourned his trial to October 20.
Okah, after the court’s pronouncement, had sought the permission of the court to make some assertions.
While making his statements off record before the court, he emphatically blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for his continuous languish in detention.
Insisting that he was just a victim of the criminal justice system, complaining about the continued delay of his trial, he said he had been subjected to both mental and physical torture.
“My life has been put on hold” because the criminal justice system has failed, he said.
While stating that he was at the crossroad to putting an end to the perpetual pain and languish, the accused summarily sat over the witness box, picked a stool and broke through the window adjourning him, jumping out through it.
If not for the timely intervention of some prison officials within the court premises, he could have successfully committed an unfathomable suicide.
His action sent the trial judge running into chambers for safety while all other members of the inner and outer bar were left scampering for safety, as a result of fear of the unknown.
The accused was subsequently apprehended and conveyed back to the Kuje Maximum Prison where he is currently being detained with a convoy of DSS operatives trailing them.
