The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has reviewed and updated the timetable for the 2026 Local Government Elections slated for September 1, 2026.
The update was announced during a press briefing held on Friday at the Commission’s headquarters in Jos.
Addressing stakeholders at the event, Plangji Daniel Cishak, Chairman, Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, said the briefing was convened to formally engage stakeholders on critical preparatory activities ahead of the council polls.
He noted that the Commission had earlier issued the Notice of Election in September 2025 in compliance with relevant laws and the Electoral Act, thereby signalling the commencement of electoral activities.
According to him, the decision to review aspects of the timetable was in line with PLASIEC’s statutory responsibility and commitment to transparency, excellence, and inclusive participation.
“We issued the Notice of Election in September 2025 in compliance with our law and the Electoral Act to commence activities towards the 2026 Local Government Elections,” Cishak said.
He explained that the adjustments made to the timetable were carefully considered and driven by operational realities ahead of the polls.
“These adjustments are guided strictly by legal, administrative, and operational considerations, with the goal of delivering a credible, inclusive, and well-coordinated electoral process,” the PLASIEC chairman stated.
Cishak assured political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies, and the electorate that the Commission remains committed to conducting free and fair elections across the state.
He also called on stakeholders and the media to give the updated schedule keen attention and to engage constructively with the Commission to ensure accurate public information as preparations for the elections continue.
