The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to receive 12 AH-1Z attack helicopters as Sunday Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), leads engagements with United States Government officials and defence manufacturer Bell Textron in the United States to fast-track the delivery.
The Programme Management Review meeting, held from 5 to 6 January 2026 in San Diego, California, focused on expediting production timelines and ensuring the timely delivery of the helicopters, which are expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s air combat capability amid evolving security challenges.

According to a statement by Ehimen Ejodame, NAF’s Spokesman on Thursday, the engagement forms part of the CAS’s command philosophy aimed at building and sustaining a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready air force capable of delivering decisive airpower in synergy with surface forces to meet national security objectives.
Aneke commended the United States Government and Bell Textron for their continued cooperation, professionalism, and transparency in the execution of the helicopter acquisition programme.
He described the structured programme review as a reflection of the NAF’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and results-driven project management.
“We deeply value the professionalism and openness demonstrated throughout this process, and we remain fully committed to working closely with our partners to ensure the timely and successful delivery of these platforms,” the CAS said.
He stressed that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters goes beyond a routine platform upgrade, describing it as a symbol of the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States.
According to him, the programme reflects a shared responsibility toward regional and global security, anchored on mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for peace and stability.
“This partnership speaks to our collective resolve to confront evolving security challenges through collaboration and sustained capability development,” Aneke added.
Reaffirming the NAF’s sense of urgency, the CAS assured the US delegation that his administration would take all necessary measures to ensure the helicopters are delivered in the shortest possible time.
He also charged the programme management team to remain proactive and innovative in order to complete production on schedule and within budget.
“Timelines and standards must be met concurrently. We must remain focused, innovative, and solutions-driven,” he said.
Aneke also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Air Force.
He noted that the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters would significantly enhance the Service’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and overall mission readiness.
According to the CAS, the advanced capabilities of the helicopters will enable the NAF to conduct highly precise operations, minimise collateral damage, and provide timely and effective support to ground forces.
He added that this would ultimately contribute to saving lives, protecting property, and restoring stability in communities affected by insecurity.
The CAS reassured Nigerians of the Nigerian Air Force’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and other criminal threats with professionalism, restraint, and accountability, while sustaining public trust and confidence in its operations.
