According to a study by the International Journal of Innovation Research & Advanced Studies (IJIRAS), many people are losing their lives daily, and several others are sustaining injuries due to several accident causes, some of which are preventable.
The study noted that the major reasons these accidents keep occurring at an alarming rate in almost all states in Nigeria include a lack of effective enforcement of road safety rules and regulations, and poor road maintenance by the appropriate agencies.
The study further called for a total and strict implementation of road safety rules, regulations, and policies in Nigeria, providing realistic training to drivers to curb these issues.
“Speed-limiting devices should be installed in all vehicles to reduce the recurrent road accidents due to speeding, and traffic calming devices should be constructed in residential areas, schools, and other public places.
“Posting warning signs and signals, public awareness campaigns on anti-speeding should be conducted from time to time, speed display boards and speed monitoring cameras should be placed on all roads
The NBS data also showed that 2,434 road accidents occurred in Q3 2025, indicating a 7.49 percent decrease from the 2,631 crashes recorded in the previous quarter, and a 25.92 percent increase from the 1933 crashes recorded in the same quarter last year.
Serious cases had the most occurrences of road traffic crashes, with 1,566 occurrences compared to fatal and minor cases of 589 and 279, respectively.
