Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has warned waste management contractors in Abuja that no excuse whether operational or logistical will be accepted for poor performance.
Speaking during a meeting with the contractors in Abuja, Wike said the issues affecting waste disposal in the city have been identified and solutions are being implemented.
He stressed that his administration will not tolerate sabotage, incompetence, or laxity.
Wike noted that he has inspected several districts, including Asokoro and Utako, where he observed lapses in compliance.
“We are here to solve problems. The problems have been identified, and solutions are being worked on. We cannot allow challenges to become excuses,” he said.
He identified the Airport Road corridor and major city districts as areas that require immediate cleanup.
“Most dignitaries stay in Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse, and other central districts. We must ensure improvement in waste management. It is embarrassing when such problems go unchecked,” he stated.
Wike urged the contractors to take responsibility for their areas by maintaining regular supervision.
“This is a workshop: if you do not work, there is no job,” he said.
He also warned against corruption and compromise, noting that such actions could have personal consequences.
“If you are compromised, it can affect your ability to care for your household, even paying school fees,” he said.
Wike advised the contractors to resist political interference, saying that some individuals may use ethnicity, religion, or personal interests to challenge their work.
He also cautioned them to expect attempts to disrupt their activities through technology or misinformation.

“Those who did not get contracts may try to frustrate progress using manuals, technology, or AI. They may take photos or spread misinformation. Do not give them that chance,” he said.
Although he acknowledged possible delays in payments, Wike assured the contractors of his support and urged them to remain committed.
“Time is of the essence. Trust the process and stay focused,” he said, thanking them for their efforts.
He called for increased efforts to ensure noticeable improvement in the cleanliness of the nation’s capital.
