China has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in its ongoing fight against terrorism and in maintaining national stability, even as tensions rise between Abuja and Washington over allegations of religious persecution.
Yu Dunhai, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, stated on Thursday that China “firmly supports” the Nigerian government in pursuing a development path suited to its own national realities.
The envoy made the comments on his official X account following a meeting with Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA).
“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people to a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanction and use of force. China is willing to continue supporting Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining domestic stability”, Dunhai said.
Dunhai’s remarks come amid Donald Trump, President of the United States’ threatening possible military action against Nigeria.

Earlier in the week, Trump directed the US Department of War to prepare for “possible action” in response to what he described as the “killing of Christians” in Nigeria.
He also announced the redesignation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” (CPC), a classification reserved for nations accused of severe violations of religious freedom.
Trump’s statements followed a letter from a group of US lawmakers urging Marco Rubio, Secretary of State to take “decisive diplomatic action” against the Nigerian government over what they termed “systematic persecution and slaughter of Christians.”
However, the Nigerian government has strongly denied these allegations, insisting that claims of a “Christian genocide” are unfounded and politically motivated.
Reinforcing China’s stance, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, also warned on Tuesday against any foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs.
Responding to a question on Trump’s comments during a press briefing in Beijing, Mao said China opposed unilateral actions that undermine the sovereignty of other nations.
“China has always maintained that each country’s internal affairs should be handled independently and without external pressure,” Mao said.
