PowerChina I²-ESS has formalised a strategic partnership with Paulken Engineering Nigeria Limited to strengthen renewable energy development and accelerate the execution of clean power projects across Nigeria under a Government-to-Business (G-to-B) model.
Sammi Zhou, global director of PowerChina I²-ESS, and Christopher Baranbaifa, managing director of Paulken Engineering Nigeria Limited, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the recently concluded Nigeria Energy Exhibition and Conference held in Lagos.
Sammi Zhou, global director of PowerChina/I²-ESS, said the partnership reflects PowerChina’s dedication to Nigeria’s clean energy future through collaboration with credible and certified local partners.
“For us, this new department is focused on the G-to-B model. With Paulken Engineering Nigeria Limited — a reputable Nigerian EPC company — and other partners, we are confident in their ability to drive PowerChina I²-ESS’ renewable energy projects across the country,” Zhou stated.
She noted that PowerChina’s confidence in Paulken Engineering stems from its strong record in renewable energy implementation and REA-certified status.
“Paulken is already supporting Nigeria’s local renewable energy market. He is exactly the kind of partner we are looking for to penetrate the market and execute more renewable power projects nationwide,” she said.
Zhou highlighted that Paulken Engineering’s longstanding presence in Nigeria makes it a strategic partner for PowerChina’s long-term goals.
“Their years of experience make our entry and operations in Nigeria more effective under the G-to-B framework. Paulken’s local content strength aligns perfectly with our market penetration strategy,” she added.
According to her, PowerChina’s structure ensures technical reliability through local capacity building and continuous after-sales service.
“We have an after-sales strategy where our Nigerian-trained engineers handle all technical issues as they arise. With over 13 years of presence in Nigeria, our team ensures customer satisfaction and system reliability,” Zhou explained.
She also noted that PowerChina I²-ESS has established after-sales centres and training hubs in Nigeria to promote technology transfer and strengthen domestic engineering capacity.
“These centres double as training facilities for local engineers. This ensures ongoing technology transfer and guarantees that our partners continue to receive quality assurance at every stage,” Zhou added.
Christopher Baranbaifa on his part explained that Paulken Engineering, which has operated since 2013 in the construction, oil and gas, and renewable energy sectors, is one of the grantees of the DARE (Distributed Access to Renewable Energy) programme and is awaiting Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Nigeria approval for an isolated mini-grid project.
“At the moment, we are one of the grantees of the DARE programme, and we hope to be approved soon for an isolated mini grid by the,” Baranbaifa said.
He added that the company has successfully executed several capital projects, including solar streetlights, transformers, and renewable power installations, while also maintaining a strong presence in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through partnerships with the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
“PowerChina is a household name known for quality and standards. We are excited to have finalised this MoU because it strengthens our base, especially in the renewable energy space.
‘My team and I are eager about the execution of big solar projects across Nigeria,” he stated.
Baranbaifa emphasised that Paulken Engineering brings extensive local content experience to the partnership, while PowerChina I²-ESS will serve as the technical partner and OEM/EPC provider.
“They are coming in as a technical partner, while Paulken serves as the local content partner. We have several programmes under DARE, and we’ll rely on PowerChina’s equipment, reputation, and after-sales support for the supply of solar panels and batteries,” he explained.
“When we get approval for the isolated mini grid, their equipment and expertise will be vital.
“PowerChina’s commitment to quality gives us confidence as we expand our renewable portfolio.
“With PowerChina I²-ESS’ technology and our local experience, we’re confident in delivering renewable solutions that meet international standards and serve Nigerians efficiently,” Baranbaifa noted.
