More than 100 smallholder tomato farmers gathered for the pilot phase at Abule Otu (Eguru), Owode, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on for the Mega Field Day- an initiative designed to build resilience and improve livelihoods through modern agricultural practices. Organised by FutuX Agri-consult Limited in collaboration with her partner, Heifer International, the event served as a pilot phase for empowering local farmers with innovative and climate-smart solutions for tomato cultivation.
Attendees included stakeholders, representatives from Heifer International, the Abule Otu community, and agricultural input suppliers and FutuX representatives.
The consulting team lead for FutuX, Funmi Bello, speaking at the event, emphasised the importance of adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and climate-smart techniques to improve productivity, enhance pest and disease control, and ensure long-term sustainability in tomato farming. The field demonstrations showcased improved hybrid tomato varieties and offered practical lessons on pest and disease management, early detection methods, and proper seed and seedling selection.
Farmers also participated in interactive sessions, where they discussed challenges, shared experiences, and explored opportunities for cooperative formation and access to finance.
This project aims to train 3000 tomato farmers across Kano State, Lagos State, Ogun State on climate-smart and sustainable farming practices with a business model that supports the farmers.
“The Mega Field Day was a platform for knowledge exchange and practical learning,” said a representative from FutuX Agri-consult.
“Our goal is to help smallholder farmers transition to sustainable and profitable practices that strengthen food systems.”
Despite expressing optimism, farmers highlighted persistent challenges such as limited access to capital and insufficient support from the public and private sectors.
The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting agricultural transformation and farmer resilience through continued training and collaboration.
