Wayne Rooney has launched a stinging criticism of Ruben Amorim, branding him the worst manager in Manchester United’s history and insisting the club has regressed under his leadership.
The former England captain made the comments on The Wayne Rooney Show following United’s 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, a result that left supporters leaving the away end long before the final whistle.
“I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be with the manager and the players,” Rooney said. “But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, or even signs that results will improve. We’re seeing none of that.”
United appointed Amorim on November 1 last year to replace Erik ten Hag, but more than 10 months on, the Portuguese coach has struggled to arrest the team’s decline. Last season, the Red Devils finished 15th with just 42 points, their lowest return since 1973/74 when they were relegated.
Despite spending around £250 million on new signings and implementing his trademark 3-4-3 system, Amorim’s United continue to suffer from many of the same flaws that plagued the side in previous campaigns.
Rooney, United’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals, questioned the direction of the team: “After Ten Hag got sacked and Ruben came in, we heard how things were going to change. But if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse.”
