The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that 2,802,790 voters are on the register for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.

The disclosure was made in a statement on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, national commissioner and chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to him, INEC conducted a voter registration exercise across the 326 wards in Anambra from July 8 to 20, 2025, during which 168,187 citizens applied as new voters.

In compliance with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the list of new registrants was displayed for one week to allow claims and objections. The applications were later subjected to the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), which detected and removed 27,817 cases of duplicate or multiple registration. This left a valid total of 140,370 new registrants.

INEC further approved 5,983 voter transfers into the state, bringing the additional number of voters to 146,353.

“Before this exercise, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the additions, the register has now increased to 2,802,790,” Olumekun said.

Providing a breakdown, INEC reported that Idemili North has the highest number of voters with 246,318 (8.79 percent), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73 percent) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71 percent). The lowest figures were recorded in Dunukofia with 83,580 (2.98 percent) and Anambra West with 71,332 (2.55 percent).

“The full distribution has been published on INEC’s website and other official platforms,” Olumekun added.

He also assured voters that their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) would be available well before the poll. “The commission wishes to assure new voters in Anambra State, as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, that their cards will be ready for collection well ahead of the governorship election holding on Saturday, November 8, 2025,” he said.

The Anambra governorship election is one of several off-cycle polls resulting from court-ordered adjustments to the electoral calendar. INEC has already released the final list of candidates, with campaigns officially underway. A total of 16 political parties met the May 12, 2025 submission deadline and will field candidates in the contest.
