Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Manchester United as the Red Devils step up efforts to resolve their goalkeeping problems.
United have been in the market for reinforcements between the posts and are hoping to complete a deal for the 32-year-old Argentina international before Monday’s transfer deadline.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Martínez has reached an agreement with the Red Devils, with initial contact already made between the two clubs. He is considered a serious option if a move for Senne Lammens fails to materialise.
Martínez, who joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout goalkeepers. The World Cup winner signed a new five-year contract extension in 2023, tying him to Villa until 2029, but now set to move to Old Trafford.
After United’s 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday, head coach Ruben Amorim admitted the pressure on whoever takes the gloves at Old Trafford is immense.
“I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper at this moment,” Amorim said.
Martínez made his first appearance of the season in Villa’s 1-0 defeat at Brentford last weekend.
He has featured 201 times for the club, earning acclaim for his commanding presence and spectacular saves, including winning the Premier League’s Save of the Season award in 2023/24.
