Growing up, Michael Okpara was surrounded by stories; lots of them, to be precise.
But the passion to tell them on a larger scale, was undeniable.
Today, Okpara, through dint of hard work and sheer creativity has elevated his storytelling craft, with tales that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best stories told by any of the best storytellers in Hollywood, Bollywood, Nollywood, among other movies industries.
Welcome to the creative world of Okpara, who is the CEO of Adinon Film Studio, a movie production company he founded from nothing.
Hear him out: “I grew up surrounded by stories—whether from family, friends, Nollywood blockbusters, or the bustling life around me”.
The above has been possible because of his strong belief that filmmaking is not just a profession; but a lifelong mission.
Despite the challenges of starting off in Nigeria, Okpara, who is now based in South Africa has surmounted all, and has moved on to build a reputation for crafting stories that are both visually compelling and emotionally resonant.
Overtime, he has carved a notch for his stories with a signature style that blends African authenticity with universal appeal.
As he earnestly desired in his days of little beginning, Okpara now plays among big names on a global scale.
So, come this October, precisely 13th to 16th, the Okpara-led company would be joining other global movie companies and entertainment moguls at MIPCOM Cannes 2025 in France.
The exhibition, slated to be held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, is a must-attend event, dedicated to the entertainment industry and content market.
Of course, MIPCOM Cannes 2025, is one of the many platforms Adinon Film Studio has shown its unique strength of storytelling and movie production.
It is Cannes today, and many other global platforms tomorrow. But recalling the journey to storytelling and movie production greatness, Okpara said that breaking into the film industry was no easy feat.
He always recalls with nostalgia how he began his career working on small productions, and learning most aspects of the craft in South Africa.
He later moved on to directing and cinematography to script development and production logistics.
He confessed that those early years were not glamorous, but they were foundational for what he and his company have become today; global movie storytelling powerhouse.
“I didn’t just want to be a filmmaker as my friends and I fondly say; I wanted to understand the machinery behind it,” he says.
“How do you take an idea and make it into something that captivates a global audience?
That question, he notes, inspired his work to the greater height it is today.
Moreover, it was that drive that eventually took him to South Africa, where he found not only new opportunities but also a thriving creative community.
What a story!
South Africa was truly the promised land for him as Adinon began to expand its scope, and began to produce content that resonates both locally and internationally.
Again, working with seasoned cinematographers, skilled set designers, and actors from diverse backgrounds, Okpara honed his vision for films that could capture Africa’s beauty, complexity, and modernity.
The journey has long begun and the opportunities abound for him, as one stride inspires him to go for a bigger one.
Not relenting, Okpara and his team are currently far in the production of yet another blockbuster movie. Titled “Love and Luxury”, the anticipated movie is a glamorous romantic drama set against the dazzling backdrop of Lagos’ elite social circles. The story follows Amara, a woman who rises from the bustling streets of Surulere to the glass-walled penthouses of Lagos Island, where she becomes entangled in a love triangle between Chuka, a driven young architect offering love, and Kamal Bello, a powerful older man who lures her into a life of opulence.
On the reason to watch out for the upcoming movie, Okpara says, “This is a story that blends romance with social commentary.
“It is about ambition, identity, and the choices we make when love and power are at odds. We wanted it to be as visually stunning as it is emotionally gripping.”
Well, apart from his hard work and creative ingenuity, the feats so far are possible through the power of collaboration as he pointed out that filmmaking is a collaborative art form.
Again, credit goes to the tireless work of his crew and cast, which brings his vision to life.
“Our cinematographers are among the best I have worked with—every frame they capture feels like a painting,” he says. “Our production crew works around the clock to ensure every detail is perfect, from lighting and set design to costume and sound. And the cast—what can I say? They pour their hearts into these roles. Without them, Love and Luxury wouldn’t be.”
Though he is already at the global stage, he is looking to conquer more.
Okpara keeps a close eye on global film communities, from the glamour of MIPCOM in Cannes to international festivals and content markets in Toronto, Berlin, and Durban. These gatherings bring together storytellers, producers, and distributors from every corner of the world, creating spaces where ideas are shared and collaborations are born. With an invitation to attend this year’s MIPCOM in Cannes, Okpara is looking forward to the opportunity to connect with fellow filmmakers, explore fresh perspectives, and showcase the vibrancy of African cinema within the global conversation.
“MIPCOM is the world stage for the content market,” he says. “It is an opportunity to meet distributors, streaming platforms, and other filmmakers from every continent. I am eager to share what we are doing and to learn from others pushing creative boundaries.”
The trip to Cannes, he believes, could open doors for Adinon Film Studio to secure international partnerships, co-productions, and distribution deals that will amplify African voices on a global scale.
While he is putting in necessary efforts and committing the required resources to finish “Love and Luxury”, currently under production, he is also looking ahead.
As he looks into the future, he sees Adinon Film Studio becoming a creative hub that will produce stories across genres—thrillers, historical dramas, and documentaries—that not only entertain but also challenge perceptions of Africa.
“I want our films to feel like they belong anywhere in the world while staying deeply connected to where they come from,” he says. “We have the talent, the stories, and now the global stage is listening. It is our time.”
With his dedication, creative ambition, and the network of collaborators he is building both in Africa and abroad, Michael Okpara represents a new generation of African filmmakers poised to redefine the industry.
Like he said that it is our time, it is actually Okpara’s time, Adinon’s time and the global stage is listening.
