Nigeria is pushing to expand its over $1b trade with Japan, at the ninth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development, TICAD, hosted by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan.

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday joined other African heads of states at the global summit, aimed at advancing Africa’s economic development,

The summit is also expected to seek ways of strengthening sustainable growth and strategic partnership between Japan and African countries , especially in the areas of trade, technology, and agriculture.

The meeting which is being cohosted by the United Nations UN, Wold Bank and African Union, will feature bilateral engagements to foster globally bal inclusivity

African countries are in need of strategic partnership to develop several areas, including renewable energy, healthcare and high tech innovations.

Nigeria currently exports petroleum gas, hydrocarbon and scraps, to Japan, while the country, in return, imports cars, buses and synthetic filaments

Nigeria is looking to Japan, the third largest economy in the world, for support in the areas of clean energy, trade and high tech innovations

Nigeria hopes to use the opportunity fast track power transmission projects going on in the country which are being supported by the Japanese government.

Other areas include improved trade relationships, expand agricultural commodities exports, of shea butter, cassava and Acha, ( oil seed), a Nigerian delicacy that is in high demand in Japan. Nigeria’s hydrocarbon is also said to be in high demand in Japan.

BusinessDay gathered that Nigeria is also leveraging the platform to lobby global leaders for the UN Security Council seat, as well as those of the vacant International Court of Justice and International Maritime Organization seats
