…as Adamawa distributes relief materials to 4,000 flood Victims.
A devastating flood has claimed the lives of eight people and destroyed farmlands in Enohia Itim, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, leaving over 800 residents counting their losses.
The incident, which occurred last week Friday, followed a torrential downpour that caused the plantain plantation and surrounding farmlands to be submerged. The flood swept away crops and properties, leaving many residents displaced.
Confirming the tragedy, Francis Abani Okpani, the Councillor representing Itim Ward in the Afikpo Legislative Council, disclosed that three bodies had so far been recovered, while five others remain missing, adding that three children were among the deceased.
But, Timothy Nwachi, Chairman of Afikpo LGA, described the incident as “deeply saddening” and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the local government would work closely with relevant State and Federal Agencies to provide relief materials and humanitarian support to those affected.
The Adamawa State Government has commenced distribution of relief materials to 4,000 households affected by the recent flood in the State
The relief materials, which were donated by the Adamawa Government, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, North East Development Commission (NEDC) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), simultaneously distributed to beneficiaries at Digital Centre, Ahmadu Ribadu, Lamido Zubairu and Aliyu Mustapha College in Yola-South Local Goernment Area.
The distribution was flagged off by Kaletupwa Farauta, Professor and Deputy Governor, cautioning beneficiaries against sales of the assorted materials. Farauta noted that Government would deploy monitoring team to ensure no item is sold or seen in any shop across the State.
She further stressed that the items are meant for family’s use to cushion the effects of the devastating effects. “Government will not take it easy with any person selling the relief items”, she noted.
