…as management directs resumption of duties on Monday to all staff
Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, vice-chancellor of Lagos State University, has pleaded with the striking staff of the institution to end their industrial action and return to work.
Olatunji-Bello, made the appeal in a message titled, “It’s Time to Move Forward” posted on the official X page of the university, when she emphasised that the university has achieved remarkable gains through unity and dialogue, hence, the need to end the strike.
“The last two weeks of silence on campus was “deafening” and the absence of the usual rhythm of learning and work had “weighed heavily on my heart,” she stated.
The vice-chancellor acknowledged the reasons for the strike and assured the staff “our voices have been heard.”
Olatunji-Bello listed the various achievements, including “100 percent End of the Year bonus for all staff,” which has prompted promotions, priority admission and employment opportunities for staff family members, regular salary payment by the 23 of every month, amnesty promotions, and full payment of Earned Academic Allowances.
Others include clearing of cooperative dues, unprecedented training opportunities locally and internationally, retroactive qualification approvals, implementation of the 25 /35 percent salary increase recently approved by the federal government, removal of administrative ceilings on career progression, and introduction of free birthday health screenings.
“These were not accidental gains. They were born out of mutual trust, respectful dialogue, and our shared commitment to making LASU a model of excellence,” she said.
Meanwhile, the management of the university has directed workers who have been on strike for over one week to resume work on Monday.
According to a statement by Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, the coordinator of the centre for information and public relations at LASU, the academic and non-academic staff should resume work on Monday.
