La Liga is reportedly close to sealing a streaming partnership with Disney+ in the UK and Ireland, marking a bold new chapter in its international media strategy.
According to The Financial Times, Disney is in advanced negotiations to stream one La Liga match per week on its platform, in a move designed to deepen its foothold in live sports.
The deal, reportedly part of a wider rights package worth under £20 million ($26.6 million) annually, would run with LaLiga’s existing contract with Premier Sports, which will continue to air over 300 matches per season as the league’s main broadcast partner in the region.
While exact match allocations remain unconfirmed, fixtures featuring global giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, both of which recently signed English stars Marcus Rashford and Trent Alexander-Arnold, are expected to be central to Disney+’s offering.
The move signals Disney+’s growing ambition to evolve from a purely entertainment-focused platform into a hybrid service offering live sports, a model already taking shape in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand, where Disney+ serves as a pipeline for ESPN programming.
In Europe, Disney+ recently secured pan-European rights to the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL), and in Scandinavia, it broadcasts UEFA Europa League matches.
For LaLiga, the Disney+ deal is a strategic play to diversify its media portfolio, reach younger streaming-savvy audiences, and strengthen ties with Disney, whose ESPN network is already paying $1.4 billion for U.S. LaLiga rights through 2029.
