Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has completed a sensational move to Los Angeles FC on a two-year deal, with the Major League Soccer side paying a record-breaking fee of over £20 million to sign the South Korean star.
The contract also includes an option to extend for an additional two years.
The 33-year-old confirmed his departure from Tottenham after 10 years at the club during a press conference on Saturday. He was in attendance at LAFC’s 2-1 Leagues Cup win over Tigres UANL on Tuesday, with paperwork and medicals finalised earlier in the week.
The fee surpasses the previous MLS transfer record of £16.5 million paid by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.
“I’m incredibly proud to be joining LAFC, a club with big ambitions in one of the most iconic sports cities in the world,” said Son.
“Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I am here to help write the next chapter. I’ve come to LA to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans.”
Son joins an LAFC team currently sixth in the Western Conference, where he’ll reunite with former Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris.
He made his final appearance for Spurs in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday. Since moving to Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances for Tottenham.
He captained the club to their first silverware in 17 years, lifting the Europa League trophy in May after defeating Manchester United in the final.
