Vice-President Kashim Shettima on Sunday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will represent Nigeria at the second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), scheduled to hold from July 27 to 29.
The summit will bring together world leaders to assess progress made since the inaugural 2021 edition and to chart a faster, more coordinated path toward building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems globally.
In a statement released Sunday, Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications (Office of the Vice President), said Shettima is expected to participate in several high-level events, including a key dialogue on transforming the global coffee value chain.
He will also take part in ministerial roundtables covering topics such as public finance, trade, and responsible investment, along with side events featuring field trips, networking sessions, and knowledge-sharing platforms.

According to Nkwocha, Nigeria’s objectives at the summit are threefold:
- Position Nigeria as a thought leader on food systems reform across Africa.
- Leverage global partnerships that align with Nigeria’s domestic development priorities.
- Promote a private sector-led model for driving food transformation across the continent.
The United Nations jointly organised the summit with the governments of Ethiopia and Italy, and other development partners under the umbrella of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Vice-President Shettima is expected back in the country after his engagements.
