…boosts SEMA’s rescue operations
As part of its efforts to cushion the impact of recurrent flooding and communal conflicts in Yobe State, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has extended humanitarian support to more than 3,000 vulnerable individuals across the affected communities.
The intervention, which was carried out on Tuesday in Damaturu, included the donation of essential building materials and life-saving search and rescue equipment aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mohammed Goni Alkali, NEDC Managing Director/CEO, who was represented by Ali Ibrahim Abbas, Prof and Yobe State Coordinator, emphasised the Commission’s drive of complementing the humanitarian efforts of the State Government.
The support provided include; 20,000 pieces each of timber wood and ceiling boards, 6,000 pieces each of 12mm and 10mm of iron rods, 3,000 bundles of zinc and 2,000 cartons of roofing nails.
Meanwhile to reinforce emergency response and disaster management capabilities, the Commission also donated modern search and rescue equipment to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The package comprised of 150 pairs of rain boots,150 life jackets, 1,000 pieces of pulley ropes and hooks,1,000 units of demarcation cable and wire, 10 sets of boat safety equipment as well as 15 complete sets of search and rescue kits
“This support is part of our broader strategy to uplift communities in distress and ensure rapid response in times of crisis. We are proud to collaborate with the Yobe State Government to bring relief to those who need it most,” he said.
Receiving the donations on behalf of the State Government, Mairo Ahmed Amshi, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, lauded NEDC’s timely intervention and assured them that the relief materials would be deployed judiciously to reach the intended beneficiaries.
“The generosity of the NEDC toward our people is not only commendable but a genuine concern for the well-being. These materials will bring immense relief and hope to affected families,” she noted.
Also speaking at the event, Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of SEMA, described the donation of search and rescue equipment as a “game-changer” in emergency preparedness and response in the state.
“This intervention will significantly enhance our operational efficiency and enable our personnel to respond more swiftly and safely to disaster situations. We assure you of optimal use of every item received,” he stated.
