Tragedy struck Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan on Monday morning as newly appointed assistant coach Akin Olowokere slumped and died during the team’s training session in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
According to Punch Newspaper, the former Sunshine Stars of Akure defender slumped on the pitch while the Oluyole Warriors were in training.
He was immediately attended to by medical staff and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
As of press time, the cause of death had not been officially disclosed.
Olowokere, a soft-spoken and highly respected figure in Nigerian football, was only recently unveiled as one of Shooting Stars’ coaches following the club’s decision to part ways with the Gbenga Ogunbote-led technical crew.
A former stalwart of Sunshine Stars, Olowokere transitioned into coaching after his playing career and most recently served as an assistant coach under Edith Agoye. His sudden passing has left the Nigerian football community in shock and mourning.
