The Niger Delta Professionals for Peace and Democracy (NDPPD), a non-partisan platform of professionals committed to democratic governance, peace, and sustainable development in the Niger Delta, has called for President Tinubu’s intervention in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State to restore peace and stability.
The group expressed concern over the lingering political standoff between the executive arm of government led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and the Rivers State House of Assembly, noting that the protracted conflict poses serious threats to democratic institutions, governance, and socio-economic development in the state.
Marcus Usual, president of the NDPPD, warned that allowing the crisis to continue unchecked could create fertile ground for opposition political forces to exploit the situation for electoral gains ahead of the 2027 general elections, thereby deepening divisions and undermining the collective interest of Rivers people.
“Rivers State is too critical to the political and economic stability of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large to be left in a state of sustained political uncertainty,” the statement read. “Mr. President must act decisively to prevent further escalation and safeguard democratic governance.”

The group further noted that the recent court order restraining the Rivers State House of Assembly from proceeding with impeachment actions against the Governor Siminalayi Fubara, should be viewed as an opportunity for sober reflection, dialogue, and reconciliation among all stakeholders.
According to the NDPPD, this window should be utilised by the Governor, lawmakers, political leaders, and all aggrieved individuals or groups to place the interest of Rivers State above personal, factional, or partisan considerations.
“This is a defining moment for true lovers of democracy and Rivers State,” the statement emphasised. “All parties must demonstrate statesmanship, embrace dialogue, and work collectively to restore calm, mutual respect, and effective governance.”
The Niger Delta Professionals for Peace and Democracy cautioned that prolonged political instability could erode public confidence, discourage investment, and ultimately inflict hardship on ordinary citizens who depend on a stable political environment for growth and development.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peace, constitutionalism, and democratic values and expressed confidence that timely intervention by President Tinubu would help steer Rivers State away from further political turmoil toward lasting peace and progress.
